I. Setup
Microphones
Before turning computer on
adjust the microphones
- Plug in microphone cable to
jack #1 in talent booth. (if two mics are needed use jacks 1 & 2)
- Squeeze the ears on the mic
clip and gently slide the mic into the clip with the grill pointing down
on the gold dot facing the talent.
- Plug mic cable into the mic.
Make sure it is clear of traffic and anything that could damage it or
pull over the mic stand.
- Adjust the mic stand height and
angle to get the mic at mouth height for the talent.
- Adjust pop screen to a position
between the mic and the talent’s mouth.
*adjusting the distance between the
talent and the mic will affect the tonal characteristics of the recording.
The closer the talent is to the mike, the more bass response you will
receive. |

II.
Computer
- Press power button on the
computer.
- Computer should automatically
log in as onu – onu. If it does not, contact IT.

III.
ProTools Setup
- Start ProTools from dock. (the
dock is a pop up menu that appears when you mouse over it, it is located
at the left end of the screen.
- In ProTools, go to File and
select “New Session”
- Create your session in :
Sound Files> Student Projects> (your name and session number)
- The session parameters
should read.

Sample Rate 44.1 KHz
I/O Settings Last Used
Bit Depth 24 Bit
“Enforce Mac/PC Compatibility” should be selected
c. Click
Save
- Go to File and select “New
Track"
Select
“New Mono Audio Track” and press “Create”
- Go to Windows and select “Show
Mix”
In the
middle of the channel there should be 3 equal sized buttons that read: Mic/Line
1, Analog 1-2, and Auto Read.
- Go to Windows and select “Show
Edit”
- Setting Levels
- Press the “R” button on the
channels you want to record. They should turn red.
- Have the talent check the
mic from their normal position and level. The green meter next to
the talent should go almost into red, but not the clip.

IV.
Recording with ProTools
- Make sure the “R” button is
only pressed on the tracks you want to record.
- Press the record button on the
transport (far right button). It should begin to flash in red.
- Press the play button on the
transport to start recording
- You should be in “Edit View.”
From this view you will see the time line moving from left to right and
leaving a red path. If the path is not red, you are not recording.
- Press the stop button to quit
recording.
- Click on the channel “R” button
to take it out of record mode.
- To Play Back Recordings
- Use the mouse or transport
control to move the timeline to the place you want to listen to.
- Press the play button of
the space bar to start playback.

V. Exporting your Recording
- Go to File and
select “Bounce to Disk”
- Select the
following Bounce options”

Select
“Convert During Bounce”
- Select “Bounce”
- Place black CD-R
in the drive
Press eject button at the top right of the
keyboard to open and close the drive.
- Name your file
- Under “where”
select the down arrow to expand the view
- Scroll to the
left and look for “Untitled CD” and click on it
- Select “Save”
- Drag the CD icon
on the desktop to the trash in the pop up menu and drop in. The trash
will look like a radiation symbol.
- A window will
appear asking you if you want to burn the CD. This will close the disk
and make is un-writable in the future. If you have other things you
need to put on the disk press “cancel” and eject the disk.

VI. Turning off the System
- Shutdown the
computer (do not select log off)
- Unplug any
microphones that you plugged in.
