SMART Classrooms
The
Olivet Nazarene University Smart classroom is
a
communication rich classroom. Currently, there
are 71 Smart classrooms on campus. These 71
classrooms are divided into two levels: 57
Level 1
classrooms and 14
Level
2 classrooms.
Operating
instructions,
schedules
and pictures are available for these Smart classrooms.
The
Level
1 classroom brings the outside world into
the traditional classroom. This is accomplished
by the use of state-of-the-art interactive information
systems. Resources available in the classrooms
are Satellite Feeds, Cable Television, VCRs, Laser
Disc Players, DVD players and Video CODECs. Sharing
the resources is as easy as sharing traditional
computer network file servers, CD-ROM servers
and print servers. Six of the level one classrooms
are equipped to send and receive live two-way
audio and video. Any of the six classrooms may
be electronically switched to the university distance
learning classroom CODEC that provides the capability
of video conferencing to anywhere in the world.
The Distance Learning Classroom is currently being used
to conduct distance learning classes, to speak
face-to-face with textbook authors to hold discussions
with leaders of the Church of the Nazarene and
to bring guest speakers into the classroom that
would normally not be possible due to cost and
time limitations (see Benner 007 below).
A Level
2 classroom includes a computer at the teaching
station; the ability to project or send an RGB
(computer) signal to a large monitor, projector,
or each student station; and the availability of
a portable DVD player or VCR and TV.
All
other classrooms on campus are equipped with overhead
projectors, projection screens, have access to
portable DVD players or VCRs and TVs as well as the potential
for becoming Smart classrooms in the future.
