SMART Board in a classroom with an ELMO imaging camera
If your classroom has an ELMO digital imaging camera, you may need to take extra steps to project the computer desktop to the SMART Board. To do this:

Operating
SMART Notebook
SMART Boards have implemented a feature titled ‘SMART Notebook’. This is an easy-to-use application that enables the user to operate the board as a notepad utilizing the markers as a drawing interface. The advantage of using the SMART Notebook software is the ability to save a previous session (essentially taking a “snapshot” of what you’ve drawn and written) and load it again at a later time. A practical advantage of this is the ability to write classroom notes on the board and export it to a Word or PDF document for your students to download or view outside of the classroom. These files can be put on blackboard, sent in an e-mail message, or even uploaded to the web.
Opening SMART Notebook
Option 1
1. There
is a folder titled “Smart Classroom” on the desktop. Open this folder, and double-click on the
icon labeled “Smart Board” or “Smart Board Tools”. This
will
open a tool panel.
2. Click the top Icon Labeled “Smart Notebook”, noted on the image to the right.
Option 2
1. There
should be an icon of a SMART board in your computer’s icon tray
(the area to the lower right-hand corner of
your screen). Click this icon, and
select ‘Notebook’.

2. The Notebook software will start. Use any marker from the board’s tray to draw within the program’s interface.
Saving a Notebook session for later use
1. Click ‘File’ on the Menu bar.
2. Click ‘Save As’.

3. Navigate to the location where you wish to save your file (use an extended storage space or your Network Storage since data stored on the computers is NOT preserved. You may do this by clicking the My Computer button on the left toolbar and choosing the corresponding location).
4. Type a filename in the ‘File name’ field.
5. Click ‘Save’.

These files will be saved in a SMART format known as ‘.XBT’. These types of files are only able to be opened on a machine with SMART notebook installed on it. This is practical for saving notebook sessions to use throughout classroom meetings, but if you wish to use these outside of the classroom, you must use a different format.
Saving a SMART Notebook session for use outside of the SMART classroom
1. Click ‘File’ on the Menu bar.
2. Click ‘Export (PDF, HTML, images)’ (The PDF is the most practical and preferred method).

3. Select the appropriate format in the ‘Export as type’ category.

4. Click the ‘Browse’ button to navigate to the location where you wish to export the session.
5. Type a filename in the ‘File name’ field.
6. Click the ‘Ok’ button.
7. Click ‘Ok’.
Opening a Notebook session
1. Click ‘File’ on the Menu bar.
2. Click ‘Open’.
3. Navigate to the location where your session is saved.
4. Select the file in the window and click the ‘Open’ Button.
Orientation
Occasionally, the SMART board may need to be oriented. You can determine this by the following steps:
1. Ensure that the necessary equipment is on and functional, including the computer.
2. Touch the SMART board surface with your finger.
3. When you touch the SMART board, an arrow should appear with the tip pointing right behind your finger. If the arrow is not close to your finger, the SMART board will need to be oriented (Keep in mind, if the orientation is incorrect, it will be a recurring problem. For a permanent solution, please contact the Media and Technical Support department at ext. 5234).
To Orient the SMART board:
Option 1:
1. There
is a folder titled “Smart Classroom” on the desktop. Open this folder, and double-click on the
icon labeled
“Smart
Board” or “Smart Board Tools”. This will
open a tool panel.
2. Click on the wrench icon in the panel, depicted in the diagram to the right.
3. This will open the Smart Control Panel. From here, click on “Orient/Align the SMART Board”.
4. Your
screen should change to a gray layout with 20 points on it. Go to your SMART board and touch the point
where each of these points appears, as indicated by the program.

5. The
window will close and return. Verify the
orientation by touching the SMART board with your finger. The pointer arrow should appear behind your
finger.
6. If the orientation did not correct the problem, contact the Media department at ext. 5234.
Option 2:
If there is no SMART Classroom Folder on the desktop…
1. There
should be an icon of a SMART board in your computer’s icon tray
(the area to the lower right hand corner of
your screen). Click this icon, and
select ‘Orient’.

2. Your
screen should change to a gray layout with 20 points on it. Go to your SMART board and touch the point
where each of these points appear, as indicated by the
program.

3. The
window will close and return. Verify the
orientation by touching the SMART board with your finger. The pointer arrow should appear behind your

Smart Board, check to verify that the power cord is plugged into the smart board
as well as a power outlet (the wall, a power strip, etc.). If there is still no light, contact Media.
Red Light – If the light is Red, the board is receiving power, but
for some reason is not connecting properly to the board. To fix this problem, please notify Media at
extension 5234.
Green Light – If the light is Green, the board is receiving power
and properly connected to the computer.
